Quickreads: Working Smarter equals Working Harder

In order to better our productivity, better the quality of our work, or advance our self development, we often spend a lot of time looking, searching and studying to find the best strategy to do so.  We pour over internet articles to help us find the best way to accomplish the task at hand.  Everything from scouring the blogs of productivity gurus, to trying to implement the latest time management method.  We try to work smarter, instead of harder.  The funny thing about that “work smarter, not harder” ethos is that if you’re even remotely interested in getting more out of yourself – and if you know what the internet is –  with the array of information widely available, we’re always working smarter.  It’s almost hard not to.  The irony is, we might not be working hard enough for it to make a difference.  Sometimes, the key to success isn’t following a precise time management structure or some fancy technique to clear your schedule, it’s just about working harder.  Sometimes it’s about nose on the grind stone, bring your lunch pale to work, blue collar work ethic.  If you can master that, you’ve tilted the success equation steeply in your favour.  We look for all sorts of fancy-shmancy-an-expert-dreamed-this-up-so-it-has-to-work techniques to become more productive and more efficient, but we miss the obvious.  No technique or strategy will get you anywhere unless you’re willing to do work.  And to do hard work.  Spending time trying to work smarter is only relevant if you’re already working as hard as you can.

    I just came from a class on military history that really illustrated this point. Napoleon, who is currently being discussed, was someone who was known not only for his detailed planning and strategizing (i.e. smart working), but for being able to do this and work for 16 hours straight.

    This definitely tipped the scales of success in his favor as you mentioned.
